Port de Sóller in Mallorca – all you must know
Port de Sóller in Mallorca is a charming port town located on the west coast of the island. Its unique location, surrounded by the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, means that the views that open up from here are breathtaking. Port de Sóller is the perfect place for those looking for a quiet, picturesque town with a touch of history.
One of the most characteristic elements of this town is the historic, wooden “orange” train that connects Port de Sóller with the town of Sóller. This train has been running for over 100 years, being not only a means of transport, but also one of the main tourist attractions. Interestingly, the name “orange” comes from oranges, which are grown in the area around the town of Sóller. This region is famous for its unique citrus fruits, and the Sóller Valley itself is full of orchards, which have been a symbol of this area for years.
Port de Sóller and Sóller are places that have retained their authentic Majorcan character. In Sóller you will find picturesque narrow streets, beautiful churches and numerous museums that tell the history of the island. It is worth spending some time exploring these places to get a real feel of Mallorca.
And if you want to feel like a local or a tourist from years ago, take a ride on the tram from Sóller to Port de Sóller. This charming wooden tram runs between these two places, offering an unforgettable journey through picturesque landscapes. A single ticket costs around 9 euros (you can find the current price list HERE),and the trip itself is a great opportunity to admire the beauty of this area.
Port de Sóller in Mallorca is a place that is both historical and beautiful. If you are planning to visit Mallorca, be sure to put this town on your list of places to see.
Sóller Wooden Train – Everything you need to know about the Tren de Sóller in Mallorca
During your journey on the historic train from Sóller to Palma de Mallorca, you will not only discover the charms of picturesque towns, but also have the opportunity to admire beautiful landscapes. The route leads through gorges, where there are vast citrus orchards, and in the background the majestic Serra de Tramuntana mountains. The journey from Sóller to Palma de Mallorca takes about 1 hour, while the Port de Sóller – Sóller route takes about 30 minutes. This unique railway was built to make it easier for farmers to transport fruit from the mountainous town of Sóller to the capital, Palma de Mallorca.
Oranges from the Sóller Valley have become a symbol of the island, known for their excellent quality and unparalleled taste, which once gained popularity throughout Mallorca. It was thanks to the constant work and dedication of local farmers, who daily overcame difficult terrain, that the railway was built. Its purpose was to facilitate the transport of oranges over the mountains to Palma, which greatly facilitated the trade and development of this small but extremely important town for Mallorca.
Today, thanks to their determination, we can travel the same route, admiring the same views. A ride on the historic train is a real journey back in time, taking you through winding, mountainous roads, and the journey itself takes about an hour. A return ticket from Sóller to Palma de Mallorca costs around 30 euros. For those who want to experience a slightly different atmosphere, there is a short but equally charming tram journey from Port de Sóller to Sóller. Tickets for the tram can be purchased directly from the conductor, and this journey is a unique way to admire the surrounding views at a relaxing pace. You can also pay by card, and you can find the price list and times of the journeys HERE.
