Formentor in Mallorca – A Guide to the Most Popular Place on the Island
Formentor in Mallorca is one of the most spectacular places in Mallorca that you absolutely must visit. As the northernmost point of the island, it is a wonderful destination to visit, full of unique views, wild beaches and historical places. It is an ideal place to relax surrounded by nature, but also for those looking for adventure and outdoor activities. However, it is worth remembering that during the summer, entering Formentor is associated with certain restrictions, which it is worth knowing before planning your trip.
How to get to Formentor in Mallorca?
Access by car
Getting to Formentor by car is possible, but only to a few selected places. If you plan to get there by car, you first have to drive through the scenic road that leads through the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, and then you will get to Formentor, where there are two main destinations that are accessible by car: Playa Formentor and Mirador Es Colomer. The road leads through bends and serpentines that provide unforgettable views, but also require caution. The road winds along the cliffs, which can be a challenge for those not used to such conditions.
It is worth remembering, however, that in the summer (from 1 June to 30 September) there are entry restrictions that make access by car significantly more difficult. While Playa Formentor and Mirador Es Colomer can be reached by car, Cap de Formentor can only be reached by bus or with a tour.
Entry restrictions to Formentor (2024)
In summer, Formentor imposes restrictions on the entry of cars. From June 1 to September 30, entry to the cape is only possible until 10:00 in the morning and after 22:30. Outside these hours, private cars are not allowed on the roads of Formentor. You can only get there by bus or excursions.
For tourists, this means that if you don’t want to go early, it’s better to use public transport or organized tours. Additionally, parking on Formentor is very limited, and the parking lots in popular spots fill up quickly.
After September 30th, access to Formentor is completely UNRESTRICTED.
Arrival by bus
During the summer, from 1st June to 30th September, there is a special bus service, line 334, which connects Alcudia with Cap de Formentor. This is the most convenient way to get to Formentor without the stress of parking or driving through the mountains. The bus stops at popular locations along the route, including Playa Formentor, Mirador Es Colomer, Cala Figuera and Cap de Formentor.
The price of the ticket depends on where you get on, and tickets can be purchased from the driver (cash or card – which is the best option) or online. Remember that there are no discounts for tourists. The bus runs regularly, but during the high season it is worth leaving earlier to avoid the crowds.
After 30th September, the bus service is limited or closed.
Optional trips
Another option for visiting Formentor is to take advantage of the optional excursions that are organized by many travel agencies in Mallorca. These excursions can include transport, sightseeing, and even sea cruises, which are a great way to discover this picturesque area. For more information about the available excursions, contact me. Places worth visiting on Formentor
Formentor is not only a unique view, but also places worth seeing. During the trip, it is worth stopping at several key points:
Mirador Es Colomer
This is one of the most beautiful viewpoints in Mallorca. From here, you can admire the breathtaking views of the coast, mountains and sea. It is a perfect place for photos, as well as a place to relax in one of the nearby restaurants, where you can try local specialities. It is worth staying here for a while, especially if you want to admire the views in peace.
Playa Formentor
One of the most beautiful beaches in Mallorca, known for its exceptional cleanliness and turquoise water. It is a beach with a blue flag, which guarantees high quality water and services. In summer it is quite crowded, but it is still worth visiting to feel the unique atmosphere of this bay. The sandy beach with a view of the mountains makes it an ideal place to relax. It is worth remembering that parking on the beach has to be paid – around 20 euros for the whole day or a few euros for an hour.
Cala Figuera i Cala Murta
These are two smaller, rocky beaches that are characterized by wild and untouched nature. Due to the more difficult access, there are no crowds of tourists here. Both beaches are ideal for people looking for peace and quiet. However, remember to wear appropriate footwear, because the terrain is rocky.
Cap de Formentor
Cap de Formentor is the northernmost point of Mallorca. This is where the island ends and the sea meets the mountain cliffs. Here is the famous lighthouse, which was built in 1863. In the area of Cap de Formentor you can often see wild goats, which are so tame that they are happy to pose for photos. The views of the coast and sea from this place are amazing and make a huge impression.
