Bellver Castle – Castell Bellver, Mallorca
Bellver Castle is one of the few castles in Europe whose shape is circular. It was built between 1300 and 1311, under the orders of the then reigning King Jaume II. It is a building in the Gothic style. The castle was both a residence and a fortress of the king. The castle is built on a mountain and the views include both mountains, land and sea. In the 18th century, the castle was converted into one of the first prisons on the island. And not just any prison, as it imprisoned high-profile personalities who simply wanted to be silenced.
In the castle, apart from the beautiful views of the entire capital and its surroundings, you can learn many interesting things about the capital of Majorca. This is because inside the castle there is a museum of the city, where you can see how everything looked in the old days. The museum is rich in ceramics and there are also some of the first heads of giants used for the local ‘fiestas’. Entrance to the castle costs 4 euros. A resident discount also applies here. In this link you will find the exact opening hours and prices: https://castelldebellver.palma.cat/portal/PALMA/castelldebellver/contenedor1.jsp?seccion=s_fdes_d4_v1.jsp&contenido=76695&tipo=6&nivel=1400&layout=contenedor1.jsp&codResi=1&codMenu=2247&language=es
Bellver Castle is located in the island’s capital.
The castle can only be reached on foot. It is located on a mountain, so to reach it we have to walk up hundreds of stairs. There are buses on the main street at the bottom of the mountain. When it comes to visiting the castle, I would recommend parking your car somewhere in the centre of Palma and taking a bus up here, or parking your car in a strategic location and planning a step-by-step tour of the capital. Palma is Mallorca’s historic city that has changed a lot over the years and is definitely worth exploring, which in my opinion takes a whole day. If you want to know exactly what to visit during your visit to the capital, then type “Palma” into the magnifying glass on the blog. Then, my post with a one-day plan of visiting the capital will pop up!
