Poblat talaiotic de s’Illot in Mallorca

The Poblat talaiotic de s’Illot in Mallorca are some of the best preserved ruins from prehistoric times on the island. Their period of perfection goes all the way back to 850-123 BC. Talaiots are found all over Mallorca. A large number of them can be encountered in the vicinity of Alcudia, on the northern part and a little inland. The prehistoric ruins of one of the first inhabitants of the island can also be freely explored in the east, for example in the town of s’Illot. Interestingly, this is definitely a large talaiot and thanks to a bridge that is open to visitors, you can see the ruins from a slightly higher perspective. This allows you to discern the grid layout of the settlement.

On each boardwalk/bridge there is a description of the room/room together with a photo. In this way you can imagine how this place looked like thousands of years ago and how Mallorca settlers lived there. The Poblat talaiotic de s’Illot consists of complexes such as: municipal building, wall, houses of residents. I must admit that it’s hard for me to imagine how people lived in those days with what is visualized for us in the pictures. Thalaiotic culture is a great pride of the Balearic Islands and interestingly enough, only Majorca and Menorca (the Gymnesian islands) have thalaiotic ruins, unlike Ibiza and Formentera.

Talaiots are buildings made using the cyclopean technique. The stone blocks were laid without any mortar. The name “talayot” comes from Catalan, from “atalaya pequeña”, which translates as “small watchtower”. In contrast, the word “poblat” can be understood as a settlement/populated place. Therefore, Poblat talaiot de s’Illot does not mean anything other than the Talaiot Period Settlement in the town of s’Illot. Despite what we see when looking at the ruins of the Poblat talaiotic de s’Illot, we must keep in mind that this is where many people lived. Both ceremonies were held here and food was distributed to the entire community. Families lived in their own “rooms.” Some talaiot also served as tombs.

What to do near Poblat talaiotic de s’Illot in Mallorca?

Other prehistoric ruins worth visiting in Mallorca are definitely those located in the Mondrago Natural Park, but also: Yacimiento arqueológico Ciutat romana de Pol-lèntia, Yacimiento arqueológico Poblat talaiòtic de ses Païsses, and Yacimiento arqueológico Capocorb Vell. What to do around the town of s’Illot? I highly recommend going to the beautiful bay of Cala Morlanda, sunbathing in Sa Coma, walking up to the castle Castillo de Sa Punta de n’Amer, and visiting the town of Porto Cristo and the caves Cuevas del Drach.
