Bellver Castle in Mallorca

Bellver Castle in Majorca, located in Palma de Mallorca, is an extraordinary place that combines history, architecture and breathtaking views. It is one of the few castles in Europe with a unique, circular shape. It was built between 1300 and 1311 by order of King Jaume II, who made it his residence and fortress. The style of the building is classic Gothic, and its construction was a testament to the power and importance of the Kingdom of Majorca.

Location and Characteristics

Bellver Castle was built on a hill, from which there are panoramic views of the island’s capital, Palma, the Mediterranean Sea and the surrounding mountains. This strategic location made it an ideal observation and defense point. Its name, derived from Catalan, means “beautiful view” – and for good reason. Walking along the terraces of the castle, you can admire picturesque landscapes that will remain in your memory for a long time.

The castle has a unique plan – the central courtyard is surrounded by three round towers and a massive main tower, called “Torre del Homenaje”, which is separated from the rest of the building by a bridge. This architectural solution gives the castle elegance and distinguishes it from other medieval buildings.

The History of Bellver Castle in Mallorca

The castle has served various functions over the centuries. At first, it was a royal residence, where Jaume II and his successors used it as a place of rest and refuge. In the 18th century, the castle was converted into a prison. It was one of the first such places on the island, and important political figures were imprisoned there, whose fate was considered inconvenient for the authorities.

In modern times, Bellver Castle has become one of the greatest tourist attractions in Mallorca and a symbol of the island.

Historical Museum

Today, the walls of Castillo de Bellver house the Palma History Museum. The exhibition allows you to learn about the island’s past – from Roman times, through the Muslim period, to the rule of the Aragonese kings. Among the exhibits you can find ancient ceramics, documents and maps that show the development of Palma over the centuries. The museum also houses some of the first giant figures (so-called “giants”) used during traditional fiestas in Majorca.

Practical Information

Entry to the castle costs just €4, and there are discounts for island residents. Opening hours and more information can be found on the official website: Bellver Castle
