SANCTUARY OF SANT SALVADOR, ARTA – WHAT TO VISIT IN MAJORCA – MAJORCA BLOG

Arta and the Sanctuary of Sant Salvador – a local town with soul.

Arta is an unusual town, located in the northeast of Majorca. The area around Arta really has a lot to offer. There are a lot of wild beaches, thanks to the Llevant Natural Park. It enchants with its mountain scenery, which guarantees interestingly spread beaches and bays. In addition, in the area it is worth seeing the famous sanctuary of Sant Salvador or the Talayotic town of Ses Païses, the heritage of the Balearic Islands in the form of ruins of ancient villages.

The center and market of Arta will allow you to experience a more local, unique side of the island. It is here that one of the most celebrated holidays on the island, Sant Antoni, takes place. Here you can eat delicious food, buy the best local alcohols, like hierbas or, better known to tourists, Tunel (a type of sweet herbal liqueur) which are produced on site. The town is also known for the production of pottery and wicker baskets and ornaments.

Mercado semanal in Arta, which is a weekly local market.

Every Tuesday between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m., the main streets in the center host a weekly market where you can buy souvenirs, local produce, fresh fruits and vegetables, and beautiful decorations for your home. There are always plenty of stores with home decorations in such cities. If you are looking for local specialties and original works of art, you will surely find something in Arta. The same goes for clothing and footwear.

The main attraction in Arta, the Sanctuary of Sant Salvador.

This beautiful shrine is located on top of a mountain, so the views are one of the advantages of this place, all the more encouraging to visit the monument. The sanctuary is surrounded by a very well-preserved wall, and the complex of buildings itself dates back to Muslim times. The church is maintained in the Renaissance style. The building is very strategically located. For many years it was a shelter for the inhabitants of the area, who were attacked by pirates and corsairs.

Entrance is free and there are 180 steps leading up to the sanctuary. You can also get here by car, parking is free and right at the entrance to the gates. The views are all over the city and besides the beautiful church, you should definitely take a walk around the walls. The place is definitely worth a visit and very photogenic.

What to see in the Arta area?

In the area I highly recommend visiting Ermita de Betlem, the fishing town of Colonia de Sant Pere (https://namajorce.pl/hiszpania/baleary/mallorca/miejscowki-na-majorce/colonia-de-sant-pere/), a beautiful wild beach Cala na Clara (https://namajorce.pl/hiszpania/baleary/mallorca/miejscowki-na-majorce/cala-na-clara/),as well as Cala Torta (https://namajorce.pl/hiszpania/baleary/mallorca/miejscowki-na-majorce/cala-torta/), Or located in the vicinity of Cala Mesquida. Going a little further you can reach the beautiful bay of Cala Agulla, Cala Ratjada, or my favorite Cala Gat. The area is very picturesque and worth attention of a person who has chosen Majorca as his destination.
