Sa Calobra in Mallorca

Sa Calobra is one of the most picturesque locations in Mallorca that will undoubtedly captivate every visitor. This charming beach, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and nestled in the narrow, winding Torrent de Pareis gorge, can only be reached by car, with an optional tour, or by sea, making the journey to it an adventure in itself. In this post, you’ll find out how to reach Sa Calobra and fully enjoy the beauty of this exceptional beach.

Practical Information about Sa Calobra:

History of the Road to Sa Calobra: The road to Sa Calobra, known for its numerous twists and scenic views, was designed by engineer and architect Antonio Parietti Coll in the 1930s. Constructing this road was a massive challenge due to the rocky terrain it had to traverse. Engineers had to deal with the difficult mountainous landscape and ensure safe access to one of Mallorca’s most beautiful beaches. To this day, it is considered one of the most spectacular driving routes on the island.
The Bends and the Road’s Incline: The road leading to Sa Calobra is famous for its 12 unique 180-degree hairpin bends that descend to the beach. These bends are very sharp, and the incline of the road can sometimes be quite challenging. The route is narrow, and the curves vary in angles, from gentle to very sharp, making the journey thrilling. It’s worth noting that the road is quite difficult, especially for those not accustomed to driving in such conditions, and the sharp turns often make the drive demanding. The most famous bend is the Nudo de Corbata, or “tie knot,” which has a 270-degree curve.
Torrent de Pareis Gorge: The Torrent de Pareis Gorge is one of the main points of interest in Sa Calobra. This incredibly scenic valley leads down to the beach. The gorge was formed by rock erosion, and its unique structure attracts both tourists and climbing enthusiasts. Hiking along the gorge, visitors can admire breathtaking rock formations, streams, and wild vegetation. The gorge itself is about 3 kilometers long and is one of the most fascinating sites in the region, with cliffs reaching up to 200 meters in height.
Mountain Heights and Viewpoints: In the Sa Calobra area, there are several impressive mountain peaks. The highest of these is Puig Major, which rises to an elevation of 1,445 meters above sea level, making it the highest point on the island. From the Sa Calobra area, you can enjoy spectacular views of these mountains, as well as the sea and coastline. There are also viewpoints along the road that offer incredible panoramas. The most popular ones are Coll dels Reis and Nudo de Corbata.

Fun Facts about Sa Calobra and Torrent de Pareis Gorge:

Fishing Traditions: In the Sa Calobra area, traditional fishing villages once thrived, playing an important role in Mallorca’s fishing industry. Though most of the fishermen have since left the region, the area has retained its unique character.
Accessibility: While reaching Sa Calobra is somewhat difficult, the place remains one of the most visited corners of Mallorca by tourists.
Torrent de Pareis: The Torrent de Pareis Gorge is one of the few places on Mallorca that remains almost untouched by humans. It is a destination that attracts tourists who enjoy hiking and climbing.
Film and Literature: Sa Calobra and the Torrent de Pareis Gorge have inspired many artists and filmmakers. The location appeared, for example, in the 2016 film The Night Manager.

Sa Calobra – How to Reach One of the Most Beautiful Beaches in Mallorca?

  1. By Car – A Scenic but Challenging Road

If you decide to travel by car, be prepared for an unforgettable journey. The road to Sa Calobra is known for its winding curves and steep slopes, but the views along the way make all the travel effort worthwhile. It’s important to note that the road is quite narrow, so it’s not recommended for those who don’t feel comfortable driving in such conditions. The entire journey takes you through the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, which are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The road is about 16 km long, starting from the town of Escorca, and it takes between 30 to 40 minutes to drive. Before setting out, make sure your car is in good condition. 1. By Boat – A Unique Sea Journey

One of the most popular ways to reach Sa Calobra is by boat from Port de Sóller. This option is perfect for those who want to combine travel with relaxation on the sea, enjoying spectacular views of Mallorca’s coastline. The boat trip lasts about 1.5 hours, offering stunning views of majestic cliffs and beautiful coves rising directly from the turquoise waters. Check out the offers HERE.

Port de Sóller is also a picturesque town worth visiting before or after the boat trip. You can stroll along the port, enjoy a delicious meal at a local restaurant, or simply soak in the atmosphere of this charming place.

  1. Hiking – An Adventure Among the Mountains

For more adventurous tourists, hiking to Sa Calobra is also an option. You can do this through the picturesque Torrent de Pareis gorge, which leads directly to the beach. This is quite a challenging route, but it offers unforgettable views and experiences. The hike takes about 2-3 hours and is suitable for those in good physical condition who enjoy a challenge.

It’s worth noting that the gorge trail can be difficult, especially after rain when the stones are slippery. Be sure to wear proper footwear, bring water, and plan your hike in suitable weather conditions.

When is the Best Time to Visit Sa Calobra?

Sa Calobra is a destination that attracts tourists year-round, but the best times to visit are during spring and autumn when the weather is mild and the beach is less crowded. During the summer, it can get quite busy, especially if you opt for the sea route, as boat trips are popular among tourists.

However, you should know that optional tours offering visits to Sa Calobra, as well as boat trips departing from Port de Sóller, run more frequently in the summer. A trip to Sa Calobra takes half a day, but it’s definitely worth it as the views are unforgettable!

Although the beach is relatively small, it offers breathtaking views and crystal-clear water with a beautiful turquoise color, perfect for swimming or snorkeling. Due to its unique location, Sa Calobra is one of the most photogenic spots in Mallorca, so it’s worth bringing your camera to capture this picturesque place.

Sa Calobra in Mallorca – Practical Tips

Parking: Although there are parking lots near Sa Calobra, they can be quite crowded during the summer season, so it’s a good idea to arrive early to ensure you find a spot. Parking is paid!
Preparing for the Hike: If you choose to go on a hike, make sure to wear proper trekking shoes, bring water, and pack some food. The route can be demanding, so it’s better to be well-prepared.
Safety: If you’re taking a boat trip, ensure that the cruise is safe and that the sea conditions are favorable. It’s also a good idea to check the weather forecast. Note that boat trips are canceled in case of bad weather.
Restaurants: Think about bringing your own snacks! Restaurants in Sa Calobra are very expensive, and the quality of the food isn’t the best. Only buffet-style restaurants are available here. In my opinion, it’s worth considering bringing your own food or having lunch in nearby towns. I recommend Port de Sóller or, a bit closer, the restaurant Sa Ruta Verda in the village of Caimari.
Fuel: At the very beginning of the road to Sa Calobra, there’s a small gas station. If you’re worried about fuel levels, remember that you can find the nearest station using Google Maps!
Beaches: During your visit to Sa Calobra, you’ll come across two beaches. The first one is Port de Sa Calobra, where all the restaurants and the port with docking boats are located. The second, main beach, is located near the gorge. To get there, you need to walk through a tunnel. Don’t worry, everything is commercialized, so the passage is straightforward. Both beaches are pebble-stone beaches.

What to See Around Sa Calobra and on the Way?

Besides the points I’ve mentioned earlier, it’s worth visiting:

Gorg Blau: Gorg Blau is a picturesque mountain reservoir that is part of Mallorca’s water supply system. Located in a valley in the heart of the Serra de Tramuntana mountain range, which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, the lake was created by the construction of a dam in the 1970s. Due to its stunning scenery and surrounding nature, it quickly became one of the most beautiful spots on the island.
Cala Tuent: Cala Tuent is a small, rocky beach located on the western coast of Mallorca, deep within the picturesque Torrent de Pareis gorge in the Serra de Tramuntana region. It is known for its pristine water and wild charm, attracting those who wish to escape crowded beaches and spend time in nature. The bay is about a 20-minute drive from the more popular Sa Calobra beach, making it an excellent alternative for tourists seeking to avoid larger crowds.
Santuari Lluc: Santuari de Lluc is a sanctuary dedicated to Our Lady of Lluc, the patroness of Mallorca. Located in a narrow valley surrounded by the high peaks of the Serra de Tramuntana mountains, near the town of Escorca, the sanctuary has a long history dating back to the Middle Ages when, according to tradition, the Virgin appeared to a shepherd. Over time, it became a pilgrimage destination for people from all over Mallorca and neighboring islands.
Es Guix: Restaurante Es Guix is one of the most unique dining locations in Mallorca, combining exquisite cuisine, beautiful views, and an extraordinary atmosphere. Situated in a mountainous area near Escorca, Es Guix is a true oasis of tranquility and elegance, offering guests unforgettable culinary experiences surrounded by nature.
