Markets in Mallorca – local markets full of traditions and flavors
Mallorca is famous not only for its beautiful beaches and picturesque towns, but also for its traditional mercados semanales, or weekly markets, which take place in almost every village. This is a great opportunity to feel the local climate, taste regional specialties and stock up on fresh produce straight from farmers and artisans. If you want to experience the real Mallorca, be sure to visit one of these colorful markets!
History and tradition of “mercados semanales” in Mallorca
The tradition of weekly markets goes back centuries and dates back to a time when Mallorca residents sourced food and daily goods directly from farmers and artisans. At a time when there were no supermarkets yet, local markets played a key role in the life of the community – a place to trade, exchange information and socialize.
Today, markets in Mallorca are not only a way to shop, but also a form of cultivating traditions and supporting the local economy. You can still find authentic products at them, although in some places they are increasingly influenced by the needs of tourists.

Markets in Mallorca – what can you buy there?
Depending on the location, you’ll find a wide range of products at the fair, from fresh fruits and vegetables to handicrafts and souvenirs. Here are some things to buy:
Traditional Majorcan delicacies
- Ensaimada – The famous fluffy yeast dough, often filled with cream, chocolate or sobrasada.
- Coca de patata – Light, sweet potato buns, typical of Valldemossa.
- Pa moreno – dark country bread, which pairs well with local cheeses and olive oil.
Local cheeses and cured meats
- Queso Mahón-Menorca – A ripened cheese from Menorca, prized for its unique flavor.
- Sobrasada – Soft sausage made of pork and peppers, ideal for spreading on bread.
- Botifarró – A traditional spiced sausage, often served grilled.
Fruits and vegetables straight from farmers
- Oragnges from Sóller – juicy and sweet, considered the best on the island.
- Almonds – Mallorca is famous for growing almonds, which can be purchased in various forms.
- Capers – a characteristic addition to Mediterranean dishes.
Local spirits and spices
- Wine from Binissalem, Pla and Llevant – high quality wines worth trying.
- Hierbas Mallorquinas – a traditional herbal liqueur, perfect for ending a meal.
- Olive oil D.O. Mallorca – cold pressed olive oil, perfect for salads and bread.
Handicrafts and souvenirs
- Mallorcan ceramics – beautiful hand-painted dishes.
- Baskets and bags woven from palm leaves – traditional handicrafts.
- Fabrics „roba de llengües” – distinctive patterned materials, ideal for interior decoration.
Markets in Mallorca – can you pay by card?
Mercados semanales markets are a great opportunity to experience the local culture and buy fresh produce straight from the vendors. At larger markets, especially in the more popular towns, card payments are becoming more common. However, not all stalls offer this option. It is worth being prepared for the possibility that some stalls may only accept cash. It is therefore advisable to bring some local currency (Euros) with you to avoid disappointment if you encounter such a stall.
Are there bargains to be had at the island’s markets?
Bargaining at mercados semanales is not as common as it might be in some markets in other parts of the world. In Spain, and especially in Mallorca, the prices at most stands are fixed, and vendors do not expect us to negotiate. Nonetheless, for small items or when buying larger quantities, you can sometimes try to ask about the possibility of lowering the price. However, it is worth remembering that not all vendors are open to bargaining, and attempts to negotiate may be received with reservation. Haggling in these markets is the exception rather than the norm, but it can’t hurt to try, especially if you already have experience in this type of conversation.
Can anyone set up their booth at the mercado semanal?
No, in order to sell at the market, it is necessary to obtain a special permit from the local authorities. The procedure includes:
- Registering the business and obtaining the appropriate licenses.
- Paying for space at the market (costs vary depending on location and booth size).
- Meeting sanitary requirements (if you sell food).
In popular areas such as Palma, Alcudia, and Inca, you have to wait up to months for a spot, so many traders rent stands from people who have permanent permits.
Are the markets in Mallorca still local, or are they already more touristy?
It depends on the place. In large, touristic cities such as Palma, Alcúdia and Inca, more and more stands are geared toward tourists, offering souvenirs and imported products. However, in smaller towns like Sineu, Arta, or Petra, you can still find authentic markets where locals do their daily shopping.
To get a real feel for the mercado semanal, visit the less popular towns and look for stalls run by local producers. It’s best to choose products labeled “de Mallorca” – it’s a guarantee of their origin!
Markets in Mallorca – which are local and which are tourist?
Mercados semanales are one of Mallorca’s oldest traditions. Some of them focus on selling fresh local produce and attract mostly locals, while others have become more touristy, full of souvenirs and handicrafts. If you’re wondering where to go, here’s a breakdown of local and tourist fairs, along with a full list of days and destinations.

What to avoid at local markets in Mallorca?
Mallorca’s local markets are a treasure trove of local flavours, crafts and fresh produce. However, to ensure your shopping experience is successful and hassle-free, there are a few common mistakes to avoid.
Take your time!
Mallorca markets offer a wide variety of products, so it is not worth rushing your purchases. Go through the entire market, check out the offers of different sellers, compare prices and quality. Buying on impulse can end in disappointment, especially if you decide on something you will not need later.
Don’t buy from the first seller you see
While it’s easy to be charmed by the beautiful stalls in Mallorca, it’s worth taking a moment to look around. Prices and quality of products can vary from vendor to vendor, so it’s worth walking through the markets and comparing what they have to offer.
Cash is the basis
Many stalls accept cards, but there are still some that prefer cash (most). Before you go shopping, make sure you have enough local currency with you. It’s always better to be prepared with different payment options.
Look for local specialties
Don’t just buy what you find in the supermarkets. The markets are a great opportunity to try real local, seasonal treasures – fresh fruit, traditional cheeses or handmade souvenirs. Allow yourself to discover the authentic flavors of Mallorca.
Check the quality of products
Although there are plenty of fresh produce to be found at markets, be sure to double check the quality. Avoid buying anything that looks overripe or damaged, especially when it comes to fruit, vegetables or fish – ask about the origin!
Beware of pickpockets!
Markets, especially those in touristy areas, can attract not only lovers of local produce but also pickpockets. Always keep your belongings close to you – be vigilant to avoid being stolen.
Shopping at local markets is a unique opportunity to experience the true Mallorcan atmosphere, but remember to approach them wisely. Being careful and considerate will allow you to enjoy successful shopping!
By visiting the markets in Mallorca, you are not only buying fresh and local products, but you are also supporting regional producers and getting to know the culture of the island from the inside. If you want to feel the real Mallorcan atmosphere, you should definitely go to one of these markets and taste the local specialities!
