The history and name of Far de Cap Gros

The name Far de Cap Gros has its roots in the Catalan language – “far” means lighthouse and “cap gros” literally translates to “big cape” or “big rock”. This lighthouse was built in 1859 and its main purpose was to warn ships about the difficult to navigate, rocky coast of Majorca. It is a key landmark that still serves its function today, helping sailors navigate these waters.

Although the road can be demanding, it’s definitely worth the effort, because the views that accompany the journey are unparalleled. On one side, you’re surrounded by majestic mountains, and on the other, picturesque views of the sea. And importantly, Port de Sóller, or Sóller, is nearby. This makes it easy to fit a visit to this charming place into your sightseeing program.

Port de Sóller – an attraction in itself

Port de Sóller itself is a place worth visiting. It is a charming fishing village that impresses with its traditional Majorcan atmosphere. We highly recommend a walk along the waterfront, where you can soak up the atmosphere of the place. Wandering the picturesque streets and enjoying local delicacies in the cafes and restaurants can feel like you are in a movie. What’s more, from Far de Cap Gros you have a great view of the port and the entire bay, which are presented in all their glory from above.

Parking and pedestrian access

At the very top, by the lighthouse, there is a small free parking lot. This makes the place quite accessible for those traveling by car. For those who prefer hiking, there are also trails leading to the lighthouse. If you like outdoor activities, you can choose this option. However, it can be a bit demanding.

Far de Cap Gros is a place that combines amazing views, beautiful nature and a piece of Majorcan history. Perfect for a short stopover on a journey between Port de Sóller, Sóller and other nearby towns. The view from the lighthouse, especially of the bay and port, is unforgettable. The presence of a wooden tram passing in the background adds a unique charm to the whole. This is certainly one of those places in Majorca that are worth visiting. All this for both the beauty of the area and the opportunity to admire one of the most characteristic points on the island.
